SISCO once again exhibited at the DistribuTECH conference in San Diego where we met with many of our customers, partners and industry leaders regarding the challenges and opportunities that they are facing. The impact of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) on the electric grid at both the distribution and transmission levels continues to be a critical issue that is affecting the entire energy industry. One of the most important challenges we keep hearing about is how to handle the increase in complexity of integrating DER to the grid. It was interesting to observe that one of the common solutions to this complexity that was presented in many of the conference sessions and exhibits is something that SISCO has been delivering to our customers for many years: using model-driven semantics for communications and integration. SISCO’s IEC 61850 and CIM solutions leverage the underlying semantics of these standards to help automate and manage the configuration and operation of the modern electric power grid. The legacy approach of using numbers or ad-hoc naming for operational data becomes unworkable as complexity increases. At DistibuTECH SISCO demonstrated how we are helping our customers to use the semantics of power system models to help them build a more resilient smart grid for the future.
